History of Sigbjørn Vik

Biographical facts

I was born in Norway in 1978, and raised in Bergen, which will always remain my home town. At age 17 I moved away from home, and have since then lived in various other places.

First I went to a place called Red Cross Nordic United World College, where I consequently spent two of the best years of my life. After I finished my International Baccalaureate Diploma there, I had a year off during which I did all the things a good student should not do, and more. I worked and travelled around Norway, did voluntary work in Brazil, and served drinks at a restaurant in Spain.

After a year of lazing around, I went to Macalester College in the US, where I three years later completed a bachelor of arts degree in Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics. Meanwhile I had a great time, also getting heavily involved in sports; cross country skiing, cross country running and track and field.

Instead of going straight to university after college, I somehow managed to end up back at my old school in Norway, where I for a year taugth Mathematics and Physics to 16-19 year-olds, as well as keeping myself busy with network administration. Thereafter I took some months off travelling through Europe and visiting friends, before I ended up working for a Spanish company in Berlin.

Interests

The observant reader should already have noted several of my interests. I certainly do enjoy playing around with computers, especially a good strategy game or two. Sports do interest me as well, and over the years I have been part of more types of sports teams than I can count. Travel is a great joy, as well as learning and using different languages. If you have any knowledge of the Norwegian culture, then you would know that I love a good party as well :-)

My main problem when it comes to my free-time, is that I don't have enough of it to do all the things I like to do. Once upon a time I used to be a very eager dancer, doing mostly international folk dances. I have spent many a night playing role playing games with friends, but it has been a while since now. I have not have the time to go diving regularly for years, and while competing at cross country skis, other types of skiing have been completely neglected.

Doubtlessly, the thing that I enjoy most of all, is trying and exploring new things that I haven't done before. Many of my friends call me crazy (which I don't mind), since any time someone comes up with a new wild idea, I will be the first to defend it and try it out. Since this includes seeing how my friends react to strange situations, I guess I can understand why some of them at times think I might be a bit too much.

Future plans

There are a thousand things I want to explore and do with my life, but I don't think I will find the time for them all. My more immediate plans include doing a Ph.D. in Computer Science, but not even that is for sure. After finishing that, I hope to be able to travel and have fun for a few years, before I eventually plan to move back to my home town and live a "normal life". But until then, I am open for any new suggestions!
